New Regulations for absences

This is a copy of a letter sent home to students on 8 February 2018 IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO FAMILIES
Notifying Parents of an Unexplained Student Absence

Dear Parent / Carer,
This year all schools are required to contact parents/carers as soon as practicable when a student absence is unexplained. Late last year the Department of Education and Training reviewed student attendance issues and changed the Guidelines to help ensure the safety of school-aged children during school hours and ensure that schools are supported in their duty of care obligations.

The new requirement for schools under the Guidelines is to contact parents/carers as soon as practicable on the day of a student’s absence. Previously we were contacting you after three days. The changes have been introduced from Term 1 this year, and all government schools must comply end of Term two, 2018.

This is timely for us given our ability now, with the introduction of Compass support for families, to send a SMS to your listed mobile number, whenever your child/young person is absent from school.
The SMS message reads:

Dear (Parent / carer)
(Child’s name) was marked absent as of 9.55am. Please contact the campus office or log into Parent Portal (Compass) to provide a reason for this absence.
We do this for your child’s safety not to harass you. We ask that parents /carers please ensure that their contact details are current on Compass. If you need assistance in doing this, please contact your campus office.

Yours sincerely,

Fred Clarke
